Grand Canyon Hybrid Trips

The hybrid trip is our most popular river adventure in the Grand Canyon. On a Hybrid Trip there are two types of boats provided for our guests: oar and paddle. This trip is perfect for groups with mixed paddle interest. A hybrid trip is great for the guests who want to paddle some of the time but also want to relax as well. One day relax on the oar raft taking photographs and the next day challenge the rapids in the paddle raft. Hybrid trip guests typically want a taste of everything.

Our 18 foot OAR RAFT accommodates four guests and one guide rowing from the center of the raft. Some guests kick back and admire the scenery, while others try their hands at the oars. The PADDLE RAFT accommodates six guests and one guide. You and five other crew paddlers are actively involved in maneuvering the raft. The guide sits at the rear of the raft and calls out commands and steers the boat. If you choose to go on a Hybrid Trip, you may pick from a variety of trip dates and prices. You might like to do the full Canyon which is 226 miles of Colorado River through the Grand Canyon from Lee's Ferry to Diamond Creek. You may prefer a partial Canyon trip. An upper half trip ranges from 6-7 days and covers 89 miles from Lee's Ferry to Pipe Creek. The 8-10 day lower Canyon trip travels 137 miles from Pipe Creek to Diamond Creek. Don't forget! An upper Canyon or lower Canyon trip involves hiking the Bright Angel Trail before or after your river adventure.

We cannot guarantee 100% time in the paddle raft on Hybrid trips. If your main interest is in paddling and you have previous multi-day paddle experience, please sign up for the All Paddle trip.

Specialty Trips
7-16 Day Stories of the Grand Canyon Discovery:
The stories of the Grand Canyon are outrageous, from the fated Hyde honeymoon to John Wesley Powell's maiden voyage. This hybrid trip will have a crew that is particularly well versed in European history of the Grand Canyon, in addition to a trip historian: Brad Dimock. Brad Dimock has spent thirty years as a guide and leader in Grand Canyon and rivers around the world. His college and graduate work centered on natural history and outdoor leadership, which combined into superlative interpretation skills on the river. Nowadays he splits his time between the life of a writer of Grand Canyon history (www.fretwater.com), and a teacher/trainer both on-river and off. Dimock's style shies away from pedantic relating of dry facts--he views every subject as another avenue for his greatest talent, storytelling.
7-16 Day Hiker's Discovery:
This trip is specifically designed for hiking enthusiasts forever enchanted by what's around the bend or over the next rise. This non-motorized adventure allows for ample time to explore many side canyons as you raft down the river, some of which we may visit only once or twice all season. Sixteen days in the Canyon is a treat but if you don't have the time, you may also choose to do the 7-day upper canyon or the 10-day lower canyon.

Hybrid trips provide a direct encounter with the Colorado River and its countless rapids. You meet the river on its own terms, at its pace, quiet and still, pounding rapids, then quiet again. There is undeniable challenge, shared adventure, and personal satisfaction along with the flexibility to meet a variety of interests and changing moods.
